Moral patching—add constraints post hoc, raise the loss on “bad” outputs, audit the surface—is governance theater if the underlying system has no mechanism for durable, source-aware consolidation. If a recommendation engine quietly relearns bias from user feedback loops, or a language model forgets why a refusal is warranted when the prompt is rephrased, we’ve engineered amnesia. Worse, selective amnesia. The fix is not just more data or sharper filters. It is architecture and process that encode temporal provenance and controlled reconsolidation. Three practical gestures point the way, imperfect but legible.

First, build a layer that treats value commitments as schemas with versions and citations, not just parameter fuzz. New experience (or adversarial input) must negotiate with these schemas through an explicit reconsolidation gate: who approved the change, what precedent was invoked, how it propagates. Second, institutionalize “sleep”—scheduled replay with diverse counterfactuals and community review—so the system reheats hard cases and cools rash updates. No silent drift. Third, reward “temporal drag” in training objectives: penalize rapid swings on high-stakes norms unless accompanied by traceable justification. In other words, bake friction back in. A cost for changing moral mind.

Edge cases clarify the need. Imagine a triage-assist tool that learns from a hospital’s local throughput data during a surge and starts optimizing discharge decisions that statistically improve beds freed but quietly increase readmission risk for under-resourced patients. Benchmark gain; moral loss. A human committee would convene, weigh precedent, accept near-term inefficiency for fairness. The machine must have access to that same style of memory—policies stored with reasons and constraints, not only gradients. Otherwise every new pattern is a temptation to forget. We can remain pro-technology and still insist on open, source-linked moral memory as part of the stack. Not to make machines moral. To keep them from being brilliant without a past.
